Festival and Fair Games

میلے کے کھیل

Some games are not everyday games. They happen on a calendar: at post-harvest fairs, at shrine festivals and urs, at Basant in spring, at the Shandur polo tournament in July. Tent pegging, malakhra, buzkashi, freestyle polo and competitive kite flying all belong to that calendar, and their scale depends on it — the crowd, the patronage, the prize and the horses only assemble because the date does. This collection groups them so a reader planning a trip, or trying to understand why a game exists at all, can see the seasonal shape of the tradition in one place. It also makes the fragility visible: a game tied to one annual event disappears the year the event is cancelled, and several of these have been cancelled for weather, security or regulation. Membership is filtered on category. Dates, locations and current status on each entry are tied to sources, and unverified entries stay in research rather than being published with a plausible festival date.
